Brainard Environmental has been supporting the ethylene oxide sterilization industry as well as chemical facilities that use produce or store ethylene oxide since December of 2016, when EPA published new data regarding the cancer risk associated with ethylene oxide. Brainard Environmental can assess and manage the environmental impact of ethylene oxide emissions, helping facilities minimize the risks to public health and the environment while complying with various environmental regulations.
On April 5, 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published the updated National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) for ethylene oxide commercial sterilization and fumigation operations. Additionally, on April 11, 2023, the EPA used its authority under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) to propose increased protections for workers and community members exposed to ethylene oxide (EtO) when it's used to sterilize products. This rule is expected to be published in fall of 2024.
